We suspended a couple of bright lights over the water at the back of the boat tonight – and it sure attracted some attention. First in were the polychaete worms, in a spawning frenzy. Here’s Kareen to tell us about them (sorry about the black in the middle of the video but Kareen keeps talking and we eventually get a picture back!)
[Here's a little wiki side note from the shore-based team in case you want to read more about these fascinating little worms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polychaete - apparently they occur throughout the Earth's oceans at all depths and for some of them biolumnescence is part of their spawning behaviour. Below is a close up courtesy of Hans Hillewaert]
We’re not done with the lights so we’ll tell you what else turns up tomorrow.
